Lions Rule The Region

Gambier Centrals Under 12's returned from Warrnambool on the weekend victorious after taking on a very well drilled and skilful Warrnambool Wolves side to claim the first leg of the inaugural Border Battle. With only 10 players and playing into a strong breeze things were looking tough after we found ourselves on the back foot early on and then found ourselves 1 down after just 5 minutes.

The Wolves were very impressive in the first 15 minutes causing problems for our midfield and backline as we struggled to keep up with their tricky strikers. Jacob Salmon was moved to centre back to help the impressive George Reicheldt with Gay Ni and Mee Reh working hard in the midfield. At the 15 minute mark and after having two previous penalty appeals denied one was awarded to the Lions enabling Finn Dickson to level the score from the spot.

Kade Turnbull was at his best in goals quick off his mark and making several impressive interceptions to help keep us in the game. The Lions slowly started to lift at around the 20 minute mark with Dickson getting his second and Mee Reh combining well with Moo Bye who played a blinder. The Lions went into the half time break after a very difficult first 30 minutes knowing that the next goal would be vital and despite having the breeze it was clear that the Wolves would continue to fight hard.

The break through came early in the second half with Salmon finding Dickson who played it through to Gay Ni who found Patrick Dycer open on the right before finding Moo Bye who slotted it through the keepers legs to score his first for the Under 12's. Matthew Winter continued to impress at left back, while Kobe Cole was giving the Wolves star striker nightmares at right back. Dickson scored his third cleverly finishing after another good passage of play that once again involved Moo Bye, before getting his fourth late in the game.

The Wolves are a very good outfit who are solid in every position, at 1 nil down, the first time we have been trailing all year away from home, with only 10 players and kicking into a two goal breeze this was a tough test and one that shows the boys enjoy a good fight. A top day out.
